Name Of Sections: Merino (Section E), British & Australian (Section F), And South African Sheep Breeds (Section F (1)) Junior Judging & Handling Competition (Section F (2))
Chief Steward: Michael Brien
Entries:Well over 800 sheep from up to 16 different breeds penned by approximately 100 Exhibitors. The most number of sheep competing over two days in one place each year anywhere in New South Wales.
A committee, open to anyone interested, meets twice a year to prepare for the show. The week leading up to the show is spent in preparation of the shed with a major working bee on the Wednesday prior to the show when the pens are finalised, straw put around, signs erected and generally getting ready for the sheep to arrive Thursday afternoon. Help is again needed Sunday afternoon for cleaning up the shed.
Forty to fifty volunteers are needed for the three days of the show. Most of the exhibitors come as family groups and often one or two will actually show the sheep whilst other family members work as stewards or in administration. The time becomes a very social and happy occasion as friendships are formed and renewed each year whilst working as a team. New workers are always welcome.
A Junior Judging and Handling competition is held Sunday morning when over one hundred young people take part in judging and handling Merino and Meat Breed sheep. The competition is run under the Agricultural Societies Council regulations with the winners eligible for Zone, State and Federal finals. Accredited and experienced Stud Sheep Judges and breeders act as Overjudges.
A number of the major agricultural high schools, both public and private bring their stud sheep for competition to Dubbo and see the sheep competitions, and the Junior Judging Competition as a valuable part of their program.
Volunteering at the NSW Sheep Show is a satisfying social experience whilst making a contribution to the sheep industry and agriculture education. With no less than 400 visitors to Dubbo for three days, this section alone as part of Dubbo annual Show makes a major contribution to the life of Dubbo City.
